So you have decided on adopting a baby to start your family but what is the next step after you have submitted your application forms? The typical waiting time for adopting a baby is 1 to 2 years and it can be a very agonizing period!
What are some possible reasons that cause the lengthy adoption period? This is due to the numerous checks that the social workers have to do on the potential adoptive parents such as whether they have any criminal records, if they are fully capable of providing for the child’s upbringing and education, if they have any psychological problems and if they are financially stable enough to look after the adopted child or children should one parent lose the income. With so many checks to be done, it is not hard to imagine why the adoption process appear daunting to many potential adoptive parents!
In the meantime, is there anything you can do to make the wait less daunting and less painful? Definitely. You can make use of this period to both prepare yourself as well as your home for your new baby. Below are some suggestions to help you:
1. Mental Preparation
How you think and feel about your adopted child is important as it will ultimately affect how you act toward your adopted child. Steel yourself to think and believe that this child is your own: not necessarily one that you, as a mother, carried in the womb for nine months; or you, as a father, conceived through natural means.
Instill in your mind that this child deserves your love. If you have other children, remind yourself that this child shouldn’t be treated differently. Treating your child like a special case can make your adopted child feel alienated later on; so, as early as babyhood, treat your adopted baby as though he or she were meant to be part of the family. Encourage your relatives and other children, if any, to do the same.
2. Be Persistent
As you aren’t your adopted child’s biological parents, the child is sensitive enough to recognize it, and he or she can be harder to comfort; you might lose hope easily, so steel yourself to not sink into depression or despair. This is especially so if you have adopted a toddler or older child. Persist and be consistent: cradle the baby as you would any of your own and over time, your adopted child will be able to feel that your love for him or her is genuine and will reciprocate. Persistence is the key to success here.
3. Acquire full medical background
Once you have selected or have been matched with your baby-to-be, try to acquire a full medical background on him or her and should there be any medical issues of concern, try to find out more about it during this time and fully prepare yourself for any future problems that might occur. There are many cases whereby the children given up for adoption have biological parents who were drug addicts or convicted felons.
As anything that the mother does will ultimately affect the health of the child in her womb, you need to be guided accordingly so that you can anticipate any illnesses that your child might have in the future. Once your baby is home with you, you will be too busy to find out about such matters, so this is the best time to source for information while you still have the time.
All in all, adopting a baby is a lifetime commitment so you should make sufficient preparations so that you will not be at a loss when your new baby finally comes home to you. It would also be less stressful if you could start shopping for some baby stuff first. What we did when we were waiting was to get one new additions for our baby per month, such as the baby cot, clothes, milk bottles, etc. In that way, we were preparing ourselves for our baby (without knowing that we will actually get two babies in the end) and also anticipating the ultimately arrival of our bundle of joy despite the agonizing wait.
