Adopting A Baby – What Should You Do If Adoptions Go Wrong

When you are adopting a baby, there are things that might go wrong and it is important that you learn about them early so that you know how to face the problem instead of giving up hope.

1. Incomplete Paperwork
A very common problem is failure to complete the paperwork that is required of you. There are pages of information to fill in when you are completing the forms for the application to adopt. Make sure you take time to check every piece of information carefully and take care to do it correctly. Otherwise, you will run into problems later on and it will slow down your application.

2. Birth mother changes her mind
It is possible that the birth mother might change her mind at the very last moment when the child was about to be handed over to you and wants to back out of the adoption. She might have decided to keep the child herself or a family member has finally agreed to help her out. As long as you have not signed the final adoption agreement, she has every right to back out of the deal and keep her child. Do not despair as there are many other children out there who still need your help. Rest assure that your application will still be returned to the pool of potential adoptive parents. Wait for your next child to come along. You might get the first priority when a newborn becomes available for adoption.

3. Long Waiting List
Sometimes it can really be very frustrating to know that the waiting list is very long and the wait seems to last forever. If you are lucky, you might get one within as short a wait as a few months but it can also be up to 3 years! Alternatively, you can try the private agencies which can help you to adopt a baby from overseas. There are many children all around the world who are in need of a family so it is not necessary that you must adopt locally. You do not have to give up your dream of adopting a baby simply because it seems to be a daunting process.

Depending on the country you have decided to adopt from, your wait will not be as long as 3 years but can be a few months too. Some countries will try to match you with the child so it can take up to a year. There are also countries which allow you to select the child you want and if it is a neighbouring country, you can even get to adopt a newborn baby! However, if you have decided to use the services of a private agency, make sure you check that it is not a scam.
