Adopting a Baby – Gaining Self-Esteem for Your Child
Children from different ethnic groups would notice that they are different from the rest. Initially, they may not make such a big deal out of it, but as they grow older, parents must step in to give the children confidence that they are not any different from everyone else.
Instead of pointing out the differences between the child and yourself, search for a common identity between the both parties. Such may include common interests or even similar habits.
Cultural introduction
Exposing your child to the different existing cultures will help express to your adopted child how much you welcome the different ethnic group and thus prove that you can also accept him or her as part of your family. Through celebrations of festivals, expose your child to these ethnic groups, and at the same time, educate your child about the importance of bonding as one family despite all differences.
Preferably, when the child is much older, organize a trip for the child to visit his/her home land. This is where the other family members can also be exposed to the different beliefs of the adopted child.
Mother tongue
If you have adopted an older child, chances are that he has already acquired his own language of communication. In this case, it is highly recommended that you should let your child continue to speak in his own mother tongue.
Getting to know the different languages would be the first step to balancing a proper relationship between you and your child, and at the same time, create a better impression on the child.
Life examples for your adopted child
Being a parent, your child will naturally look up to you as a life example for them to follow. If your child is being out-casted, they will feel a need to confide in someone who understands them, and is going through the same thing as they are.
Parents must be there for their child so provide a pillar for support. Although you will not be able to fully understand their plight, just being there for them is good enough. Also, teach them how they should handle the situations and to overcome them.
Realizing their passion and their capabilities
Confidence can be a beneficial yet hurtful tool. Confidence can both destroy and create a future for an individual. It all depends on how you look at it.
The importance of confidence is that it helps them to overcome peer pressure. Building confidence is simple, as you can just them for courses, which can at the same time provide them with an exposure to more friends but this should be started early in order for it to be effective. This confidence would help in the long run, as the child will feel a sense of belonging to the family and perhaps even the community.
No matter how you have decided to help your child fit into your family, you must always remember that you must always shower your child with everlasting love and care no matter what happens, which will aid in the development of your child’s character. This in turn would determine how your child approaches a situation when met with troubling issues.
