Finally, you have brought your adopted child home to live with you. What is the next important thing you must do now? Yes, it is none other than building that bond with your newly adopted child. It is vital to build a strong relationship with your child because you have to ease that tension and make them feel secure and comfortable living with you. Only with a strong relationship can your child trust and confide in you if he/she faces any problems. It will also help them to build confidence.
Bonding with your child might seem like a daunting task at first, especially if you have adopted an older child but with lots of patience, determination and over time, you will definitely succeed in building that relationship with your child. This article looks at some ways in which you can build that bond successfully.
1. Talk to your child often
This will help to build your child’s confidence that you will never leave his/her side even when you are busy with household chores. It is comforting for your child to hear your voice even without seeing you and this is true especially for very young children. Talking to your child will also help him/her to learn your language if your child is from another ethnic group.
2. Touch
It is vital that you hold your child often even if you were rejected at the beginning because your child might not be used to being held and will not be receptive to it. However, hugging your older child or cradling your infant can make your child feel loved, warm and secure. Therefore, never giving up on hugging your child whenever you have the chance to and even if your adopted child reacted violently against it, especially at the beginning. Hug your child tightly to give him/her the trust that you will never leave him/her no matter what happens.
3. Sing or hum a tune
You do not have to be a super idol to sing to your child! As long as you are able to carry a tune, find opportunities to sing nursery rhymes to your child. It will make him/her feel more at ease and even enjoy your company. It is also believed to help in developing language.
4. Massaging your child regularly
Giving your child daily massages will not only help in providing a chance for you to bond with your child, it is also believed to help in the mental and physical development of little children. Not knowing how to massage your child should not be a reason to stop you from doing it as there are lots of massage classes out there that you can join.
5. Making use of daily activities
Diaper-changing can be a messy task which many parents dislike but you can make use of that as a time to talk, cuddle or play with your baby. Remember to constantly tell your baby that you love him/her. Talk to your children about the day they had at school or what they had done that day over meals together. This shows that you take an interest in their lives.
